According to legend, “Mission furniture” was first developed in the Spanish missions of Mexico and the American southwest a few centuries ago, but the style didn’t get named as such until 1890 in San Francisco. These furnishings reflect the humble ways of poor monks who built these very functional pieces to convey their reserved spirituality. Unlike the ornate Victorian fashions popular around that time, Mission furniture features simple lines and a minimal amount of embellishment. In spite of its humble beginnings out West, this style of furnishing was first mass manufactured in New York by an East Coast designer named Joesph McHugh. The Arts and Crafts movement adopted Mission furniture as a thematic style and was highly popular from 1890 to 1914, but its emphasis on highly skilled hand crafted furnishings proved to be too expensive for the average buyer. Oak has always been the favorite wood material for this style of furniture, as it is strong, durable and has a natural beauty which requires no finishing. Nowadays this style is popular again as either a contemporary accent with clean lines, or as a collector’s item as with older pieces.
